Prevention of Suicide due to exms GE,Writing for New Media practical exam 2021

Depression and suicidal thoughts are serious mental and physical health problems that can lead to a medical emergency if not treated early. Suicide is a leading cause of death for people between 15 and 24 years. Do you know that a suicide case occurs every 40 seconds in the world? In India, about 2 lakh people commit suicides annually. There are 27,000 suicide cases observed in the US and 37,000 in Britain, annually. However, the number of people who fail to attempt suicide is high.
In Assam, class X or XII students committing suicide is alarming. The number of suicides due to poor performance in exams has remained stagnant over the years, with their share among student suicides steadily going down. Several mental, physical, and social issues are responsible for suicides. Most often, parents push children for excellence without knowing their boundaries and compare their children with others. Students also have to bear bad comments from parents and teachers. These pressures cause tremendous mental distress, further worsened by underperformance in examinations and not getting admission to desired institutions, leading to the decision to take life. Suicide is preventable, and parents, friends, and society can save a student’s life by offering some help. For that, understanding the signs of depression or suicidal thoughts is necessary. Here are some warning signs:
Deteriorating academic performance
Depression, dramatic mood changes
Hopelessness
Preoccupation with death (Thanatophobia)
Anxiety or agitation
Uncontrolled anger or rage
Engaging in risky activities
Withdrawing from friends and family
Neglecting appearance and hygiene
Increased alcohol or drug use
Giving away prized possessions

We can prevent students from committing suicide by taking the below actions:
If needed, a student must be referred to a mental healthcare professional. Treatment and recovery are possible through counselling, therapy and medication. To ensure a holistic - physical, emotional and mental, well-being of students, society must sincerely endeavour to bridge the gap in the education sector vis-a-vis mental well-being.
Parents must understand how fragile their children's mental well-being is and be proactive in assessing it. Teachers need to be trained to identify symptoms and patterns of mental issues. For example, before scolding a child for disruptive behaviour, teachers must analyse the reason behind such behaviours. Also, educational institutions must conduct a psychological counseling program to help students deal with their issues in a comfortable confidentiality environment.
I personally want to tell all students who are suffering from mental depression that suicide does not end the chances of life getting worse; it eliminates the possibility of it ever getting any better.
Place your hand over your heart; can you feel it? That is called purpose. You’re alive for a reason, so do not ever give up. Because if you kill yourself, you’re also going to kill the people who love you.
Parents can follow the below points to keep their examinee away from suicides:
1. Family support, cohesion, and good communication: All family members should mentally motivate the candidate.
2. Peer support and close social networks:
Good relationships with friends can keep students away from suicidal tendencies.
3. Cultural or religious beliefs that discourage suicide and promote healthy living: Spiritual thoughts, the morning and evening prayers keep the mind sacred.
On 10 September 2003, The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) organized the first World Suicide Prevention Day. They have stated the below points for prevention of suicides:
Be direct; ask them if they are considering suicide or have a plan.
Don't be judgmental, give advice, or try to talk them out of suicide.
Don't swear to secrecy.
Offer hope that alternatives are available.
Don't leave the person alone.
Take action, remove means, and assist them in getting the help they need.
Inform residence life and housing staff if you live in a residence hall.
Consult with a counselor as needed.
Let us take an oath to create a comfortable place for our younger ones and save their lives. “The real reason for not committing suicide is because you always know how swell life gets again after the hell is over.” — Ernest Hemingway
